It’s been way too long since the last NBA expansion. The league has more than enough talent now to handle two additional teams and an expansion draft, and with this being an ever-growing business with plenty of cash to give away, it’s about time they get it done.
Notably, unlike his predecessor, David Stern, Commissioner Adam Silver has always been open and willing to discuss expansion plans, and it seems like it’s just a matter of time before that becomes a reality.
With that in mind, the league may have to make some tweaks and adjustments to make room for the two teams that could enter the Association soon.
According to Evan Sidery of Forbes, Seattle and Las Vegas are the current favorites to get expansion teams, unsurprisingly.
Of course, that means that one Western Conference team would have to be moved to the Eastern Conference, and the league will reportedly include that issue in their expansion discussions, which will take place next month.
Sidery adds that the Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, and New Orleans Pelicans make the most sense for this conference realignment. Truth be told, all of those franchises would benefit greatly from heading to the Eastern Conference, and they should strongly push for that.
Not only it would make travel significantly lighter and easier for them but their postseason odds would also get a significant boost, as the East isn’t as tough or stacked as the West. Then again, unfortunately, it might take years before something gets done.
